Securing Your Game Server from Griefers
Implement allowlists, backups, and anti-cheat measures to protect your community from hackers and trolls.
Running a public server opens you up to bad actors who want to ruin the experience for everyone else. Securing your server requires a combination of access control, monitoring, and robust backup strategies.
1. Implement an Allowlist (Whitelist)
If you are running a private community server, never leave it open to the public. Enable the whitelist feature.
- Minecraft: Type
whitelist onin the console, thenwhitelist add [playername]. - Rust: Use an Oxide plugin like Wulf's Whitelist to restrict access by SteamID.
2. Use Anti-Griefing Plugins
For public servers where a whitelist isn't an option, moderation tools are essential.
In Minecraft, install CoreProtect. It logs every block placed, broken, and item taken from a chest, allowing admins to instantly rollback damage caused by a griefer without affecting the rest of the world.
3. Automated Off-Site Backups
Never trust a single drive with your community's hard work. GameSphere offers automated daily off-site backups.
- Go to the Backups tab in your dashboard.
- Enable Automated Daily Backups.
- Configure the retention policy (e.g., keep the last 7 days of backups).
If the worst happens, you can restore your server to a previous state with a single click.
